Roofs with attic or loft space within can benefit greatly with the addition of dormers. They bring ventilation, view, and light into the otherwise dark cavity. Shed dormers have a forward sloped single roof plane so can be used for wide dormers with their own raftered roof structure. They can be used in raftered main roof designs. Gable dormers, often called "doghouse" dormers make smaller openings for light and ventilation but not much for view or usable space. They typically have their own rafter framed roof and they can be built on main roof structures of rafters or trusses - so quite versatile and easily applied - are usually not less than 2 feet, not more than 6 feet of width. Behm Design has built a collection of dormer garage designs in many different sizes and has been a very popular solution for traditional or colonial style homes.
