Carriage House Style Garages

These structures were historically build to store and park carriages and the animals to pull. Locations were often right in town near other types of buildings for convenient access. They had oversized swing out doors to secure the premises. Modest living spaces were usually built into the attic spaces as accommodations for the drivers and related workers. Because living spaces needed both light and ventilation dormers with openable windows became standard. This was a building type that was recognizable and an intrinsic part of in-city living. Over many years that followed the obsolescence of drawn carriage travel these buildings were re-purposed. Their legacy has inspired generations of architects and designers and this archetype presents in many contemporary buildings. Our collection of the Carriage House type of garage plans has been very popular and we have a good selection of sizes available. Also view our collection of colonial style garage plans.
